We have been spending Christmas at Northcote Manor for many years, and, as many other guests, reserve our rooms for the following year on departure. This establishment is genuinely very hard to beat. The food is consistently excellent; indeed the gourmet dinner on Boxing Day night was particularly good this year, with some of the best beef we have ever tasted, carefully selected matched wines, and an excellent port to complete the evening. The appointment of Richie, the head chef, to General Manager a couple of years ago was an inspired decision, with the food and hotel functions integrating seamlessly. Each meal is carefully planned and wonderfully executed.
One feels more like a friend staying in a country house than a hotel guest at Northcote. The staff are genuinely friendly and there is an obvious desire to please; nothing is too much trouble. The lounge is more like a comfortable sitting room to meet with old friends, and, with wood-burning stoves throughout, the atmosphere is always warm, relaxing and inviting.
We invariably bring our Labrador with us to Northcote. With a strict policy of "no dogs in the lounge or restaurant" this has minimal impact on other guests, although many guests are accompanied by their pets and there is a second lounge where dogs are welcome; indeed one can spend a relaxing couple of hours surrounded by new and existing friends and being served teas, coffees and home-made cakes - or alcoholic beverages if one prefers, with the dogs lying happily in front of a roaring log stove - blissful for all concerned, including the animals!
Our suite was well presented and very cosy, with a comfortable bed and lounge area. There was plenty of hanging space, and everything you might expect from a hotel of this standard provided. Northcote Manor stands in extensive grounds, with lawns, woodland and numerous paths on site, and is close to a wide range of attractions, beaches and pretty villages to explore.
This is one of those establishments that is really very hard to fault. If you are seeking somewhere rather special where you, your wife - and dog - can enjoy stress-free luxury, excellent food and friendly, helpful service, then look no further. This is the place. (December 2013)
After a particularly difficult year my we decided to treat ourselves to a Christmas break in the north Devon countryside. Due to work commitments we were not able to arrive for afternoon tea on christmas eve but with some prior planning, and the kind help of Richie the hotel manager, a bottle of chilled bubbly was put in our suite for our arrival. It was dark when we arrived at the hotel but we were greeted at the door by Richie and one of his team and we were quickly taken to our room and our luggage brought up. Christmas eve dinner of venison was lovely - our relaxing break had begun. Breakfasts on all days were served in the lovely conservatory and all the staff were absolutely first class - nothing was too much trouble. Christmas day was spent near the hotel with a walk before and after lunch and a wonderful cold buffet in the evening. The hotel was not overcrowded and it felt more like a few days away at a house party with friends. The festivities were rounded off by a gourmet dinner with wine on boxing day evening. All the guests were seated at one table and it was a great way to get to know one another better and to round off a thoroughly enjoyable stay. Northcote is also a dog friendly hotel and there were a number of guests who had brought their canine companions with them for the Christmas break. Dogs are allowed in the non carpeted areas of the hotel's ground floor and in some bedrooms. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Northcote Manor, we met some lovely people, some who return year on year to the hotel for the Christmas break. We can absolutely understand why this north Devon hotel has got under their skin and why some book their rooms for the following year on departure. Book early to avoid disappointment! (December 2013)
After staying with friends in August, we decided to return to celebrate our Wedding Anniversary in December. Arriving in the dark, the hotel looks so welcoming and the festive decorations classy, rather than the "in your face" approach taken by other hotels at this time of year. As per our last stay, the staff were excellent, very helpful and engaging. Strangely enough, I had contacted the Northcote Manor, whist staying at another so say country house hotel, that had managed to confirm to us how good the Northcote Manor had been on our previous visit. I spoke to Richie and explained that it was for a special occasion, then made the reservation with confidence. This time we stayed in one of the comfortable suites and again had the gourmet six course taster menu, with various glasses of accompanying wine. Mitchell, the wine waiter certainly has an extensive knowledge of his subject. The food was excellent from the canapés through to the cheese board and despite the obvious smaller, but very well presented courses, due to the number of them, you certainly feel that you have eaten well after. I think we will have to make our next trip to Northcote Manor in the spring, to see yet another side of the lovely country house hotel. (December 2013)

What can we say really. You guys made our day the mosr perfect we could imagine. Everything went so smoothly, the food was absolutely fantastic and everyone said so. Every guest commented on the beauty of your venue & how well it all went. Nothing was too much trouble or strange especially accommodating our ferrety guests :-) Briony & Lisa are a credit to you all organising so much even Briony checking i was alright before i went down to the ceremony, everything was so personal we felt so at home. Centre pieces being used to decorate after the meal too what a stroke of genius. All we can say really is a big THANKYOU SO MUCH for everything. You deserve a 5 star rating! I only wish we could do more to thank you all for being so fabulous. Lots of Love Jordan & John Cummins & the Ferrets!x (September 2013)
you want your Big Day to be perfect but you have to trust numerous third parties to deliver on promises. We are so glad we placed our trust in Northcote Manor. We knew as soon as we walked in that this is where we wanted our wedding and from that initial chat and tour through the preperations up to and on the day itself, all the team at Northcote were fantastic. I wish i had the space to mention specific people too who really went the extra mile in the service they provided us all. The venue was perfect for s as it effortlessly conbines a sense of grandeur with (crucially) comfortable surroundings. Like a very wealthy relative with a great taste has invited you to a really friendly party at their country retreat. Large enough to have a real sense of occasion, small enough to generate real atmosphere and of course scenery and a setting that's hard to beat. (Email extract September 2013)
