For anyone looking to escape the hustle and bustle as we approach the end of the year, there are few better places than Devon to get away from it all. If the idyllic scenery and seclusion weren’t enough, it’s a time of year that offers wonderful seasonal food and a magical festive season. Here are just some of the things to look forward to:
While Exmoor is always a popular place to roam in the summer, it seems a crying shame comparatively few visitors discover its autumn and winter colours. The classic spots take on a fresh grandeur as we pass from autumn hues to frosty hilltops. Not that the local wildlife or culture go to sleep. On the contrary, there are some wonderful events, talks and guided walks in prospect.
Whether you want to learn a new craft, explore local markets or simply discover a great walk (our previous blog has five excellent routes to try!), you’ll seldom find our nearest national park more peaceful, or dramatically beautiful. Take a peek at http://www.exmoor-nationalpark.gov.uk/enjoying/events for event listings of many kinds throughout October, November and December.
Some of us love getting into gear for Christmas; others loathe the busy shops, queues and clamour to get ready. Whichever camp you fall into, Devon is a great place to experience a little festive cheer at your own pace.
For those who dread the usual gift and food shopping scrum, our festive markets are an especially welcome alternative. There are a series of special Christmas Farmers Markets at The Big Sheep throughout December, for example, while the 2017 North Devon Christmas Market is set to bring over 130 unique craft and food stalls to Braunton, near Barnstaple on December 2nd.
Of course, the coming of winter also heralds a wonderful time for food. We run selected gourmet breaks and special dinners throughout the year, and if you’re quick there is still time to book our October Gourmet Evening on Saturday the 28th 2017! With culinary treats from scallops to local Venison, all accompanied by perfectly matched wines, it promises to be a mouth-watering feast in five courses!
If you can only join us later, however, never fear because our pre-Christmas lunches are available throughout December 2017. With three courses of award-winning festive food with a twist, our Chef-Patron Richie Herkes and his team deliver a Christmas meal with a difference, guaranteed to satisfy the devoted foodie! Of course, if you are able to get away for the Christmas period itself, little beats a few days of pure relaxation with all the trimmings (and no cooking or washing up!) here in the beautiful Devon countryside. We still have a few remaining places for our 2017 breaks too, whether it’s a two-night break or one of our three or four-night packages. All come with wonderful hospitality and the best of Devon food and drink, with all the trimmings and things you love, from festive delicacies to entertainment from Emma Graham, our harpist.
