Although it’s fair to say that many guests love our location for its idyllic seclusion, a surprisingly rich selection of events in the surrounding towns and villages provide an authentic flavour of the region each summer. Whether it’s folk music or jazz, superb sea food or Devon craft beer and cider, these gatherings and performances are well worth tracking down.
What’s on in North Devon for Summer 2015? Here are some great events to head for in May, whether you want to dip into our thriving art and crafts scene, discover the sounds of the summer or treat your tastebuds:
Step into summer: What could be better than a walk through some of Devon’s fabulous coast or historic villages? How about tackling a route with the locals, who can give you all the fascinating insight you won’t find in the guidebook? North Devon and Exmoor Walking Festival (Sat 2nd-Sat 9th May) has exactly this feel. From rare wildlife to forgotten railways, there is so much to discover, and in the best company too. The 2015 event includes a visit to Lundy Island, among other highlights. For full details of how to get involved, see the official website: www.exmoorwalkingfestival.co.uk
A landmark in taste and sound: Bored of big festivals with overhyped bands and bland, overpriced beers? Devon is still a region where you can find small, intimate festivals where the entire raison d’etre is great beer, great food and a laid back sense of fun. Just one of several such events, Ilfracombe’s Landmark Beer and Music Festival (Fri 1st-Mon 4th May) could be just the ticket for you. It’s free to attend and features live entertainment, finger licking local food and some great ales and ciders. More event details HERE.
A devilishly good arts scene: If you thought that the main drama in Devon was the occasional escaped cow, perhaps it’s time you took a closer look at the region’s theatre and arts scene. The Plough Arts Centre is a point in case: while other Devon venues creep along on a diet of B-list celebrities and the occasional appearance of the Wurzels, here is a performing arts centre worthy of the name. A range of live theatre, music, exhibitions and events make this a great detour with some unique experiences at any time of the year. Full listings here: www.theploughartscentre.org.uk
Revving up: For any fans of classic vehicles or transport nostalgia, South Molton Vintage Rally (Sat 30/Sun 31 May 2015) is always a popular event in north Devon. Timeless hotrods, antique cars, steam engines… you name it you’ll find it at the show, along with the folks who know all about it are in their element bringing these magical metal beasts to life.
