As one of the UK’s most pretty and peaceful areas, country pursuits and field sports in North Devon hold a huge draw for many of our visitors. Whether you are looking for golf days, shooting or some rod bending fishing, you’ll find some excellent locations in North Devon, all within easy reach of Northcote Manor Hotel, near Barnstaple and Torrington. Here are just a few of our favourite locations and activities for sporty guests and lovers of the outdoors:
For the avid golfer, a day of play is an absolute must when you visit the region. The North Devon countryside lends itself perfectly for some unique and challenging courses, many of which can be booked for golf days without requiring full membership.
Just a short distance from Northcote, for example, are two cracking golf courses available for day visitors. Libbaton Golf Course provides an interesting 18 holes of varied play, or 9 holes for shorter sessions. There are sensible rules in place, but this is a welcoming course and visitors are free to relax in the club house for a drink after their day’s play.
Chulmleigh Golf Course is another welcoming club in the area for the day visitor. Whether you are looking for a casual afternoon or a full day's play, uests can book anything from 9 to 36 holes. With a relaxed dress policy and a pay and play system, this is an ideal place to play golf with family and friends, with excellent rates for groups and under 16s.
Another benefit of our lovely, leafy area is that there is no shortage of places to shoot in North Devon. There are options for every experience level too, whether you are an experienced gun or a raw beginner looking for shooting lessons. The nearby Highbullen Estate can organise shooting parties and shooting days for the keen field sports enthusiast, with great facilities and well organised events.
For more casual sessions or a fun introduction for those new to field sports, South Down Adventure Shooting Ground is an ideal setting. With a dedicated area for target sports, equipment hire and friendly tutors on site, visitors can pick between various options. Clay pigeon shooting sessions are a popular choice, but you could also take aim with the bow if you might prefer trying your hand at archery.
You don’t often hear a huge amount about the angling potential of North Devon, which is just how the locals like it! A surprising and diverse selection of sport is available in the area, whether you prefer coarse or fly fishing.
To begin with the fly angling side, the River Taw is a wonderful place for brown trout, sea trout and salmon fishing, with delightful beats and numerous pools. While the river is sometimes challenging, specimen sea trout and large salmon are caught every season here. The Rising Sun at Umberleigh has several miles of fishing here, and is probably your best bet for day tickets and advice.
Should you be more interested in fly fishing for trout, we would also heartily recommend the excellent, conservation-minded Westcountry Angling Passport Scheme. With dozens of miles of accessible fishing on some of Devon’s most idyllic streams, the visitor will find some truly beautiful and often underfished water to explore with light tackle. Should you arrive out of season, however, there is also the productive Blakewell Fly Fishery to try for rainbow trout. Located just outside Barnstaple, it is open all year.
Meanwhile, for the coarse angler there are many stillwater fisheries in the area with all the usual species. The nearest major day ticket fishery to Northcote Manor is Stafford Moor. Various lakes in this complex offer excellent sport for carp, roach, perch, crucians and many other species, whichever method you like to fish.
Situated in glorious countryside, amidst a wealth of fantastic locations to enjoy your favourite outdoor activities, Northcote Manor is a delightfully peaceful place to escape the everyday.
